What Real ID Means for Car Dealerships and Why It's Time to Rethink How You Verify Customer IDs
Earl Beach · June 30, 2025
May 7 marked a big change in how we verify identities in the U.S. With the new Real ID requirements now in effect, this shift is starting to impact other areas - including car dealerships.
What Is Real ID?
Real ID is a federal standard for driver's licenses and ID cards. You'll know one by the star symbol in the top corner. To get one, customers must show several documents proving identity, SSN, and residency - making it much harder to forge.
Why It Matters For Your Dealership
Identity fraud at the point of sale is climbing. Sophisticated synthetic IDs slip past visual checks. If your front line is still glancing at a license and trusting it, you're carrying real risk on every deal.
What To Do Now
Upgrade ID verification to a scanner + AAMVA database check at every deal jacket. Train your team to spot the Real ID star. Document the process - your F&I auditors and lenders are going to start asking.
